A new car deserves pampering, and that’s exactly what my new white Toyota Fortuner, nicknamed “BOSS,” received at the 3M Car Care center in Madhapur, Hyderabad. After researching online and contacting the owner, Vinod, I was impressed by his knowledgeable and professional demeanor. The initial phone call was refreshingly informative, focusing on my needs rather than a sales pitch.

Upon arrival at the center, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a past connection with Vinod. We had started our careers together two decades prior! After a successful career, Vinod decided to follow his passion for automobiles and opened the 3M Car Care center.

For BOSS, I opted for the 3M anti-corrosion treatment with a 5-year warranty and the Total Exterior Package – Large, costing Rs. 14,800. The anti-corrosion treatment was chosen not just for rust prevention, but also for a quieter and smoother ride.

The exterior detailing process was comprehensive: The car’s interior was dry vacuumed, including the carpets and seats, followed by a thorough cleaning of the mats. The exterior was then washed using a special foaming treatment to remove dirt and grime. This foam wash utilizes a foam lance and pressurized water with a pH-neutral 3M shampoo.

Next, organic contaminants like tar were removed using a 3M adhesive cleaner, and inorganic contaminants were eliminated with a cleaner clay. The entire car was then machine polished with a 3M buffing pad to remove minor swirl marks and prepare the paint surface for a high-gloss finish.

After the polishing, any remaining dust was removed, tire polish was applied, and plastic and vinyl parts were dressed. The engine bay was also detailed, and the windows were cleaned with an ammonia-based cleaner. Finally, a durable synthetic sealant wax was applied to provide UV protection for 8-9 months, depending on maintenance. Regular waxing is recommended to maintain the shine and protection.

The 3M team’s dedication and attention to detail were evident throughout the process. Their commitment to quality checks at each stage provided reassurance and justified the cost. The overall experience was professional, and the staff’s courtesy and the shop’s cleanliness were commendable.

Beyond the initial detailing, I returned to 3M for underbody coating and paint protection film (PPF). The underbody coating enhances rust protection and minimizes road noise. The PPF protects vulnerable areas like the front fenders, wheel arches, door sills, door edges, rear fenders, and side mirrors from scratches and other damage.

The PPF is especially valuable on a white car, offering an almost invisible layer of protection. While there’s a slight risk of yellowing over time, the benefits outweigh the potential drawbacks. Regular waxing can help mitigate this issue. In the worst-case scenario, the film can be removed.

I’ve also had the front portion of the bonnet and door handles protected with PPF to prevent rock chips and nail scratches.
